diversity logo Safeway's commitment to diversity and inclusion, and thoughtful people practices remains a core element of the company's philosophy, ensuring our employees reflect the diverse communities we serve. In recognition of our commitment to attracting and retaining a diverse workforce, we were honored with the Champion of Diversity Award for the second consecutive year from Supermarket News, a leading grocery trade publication. In fact, Safeway employs nearly 10,000 people with disabilities.

In addition to our previously established network groups for Women, African Americans, Asians, Hispanics, and the Gay, Lesbian Bisexual and Transgender Alliance, we strengthened our employee network groups in 2009 to include Cancer Survivors, Corporate Social Responsibility (The Green Team) and Single Moms and Dads. In partnership with our Women's Network Group, Safeway hosted the Network of Executive Women for an interactive networking event with a keynote address from Safeway Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, Steve Burd.
We also have a robust on-boarding process that not only sets the stage for our corporate culture, but speaks to our values, community involvement and innovative environmental advances. An engaged, diverse workforce is a key element of why Safeway remains an employer of choice in the recruitment, development and deployment of a talented employee population.
