Safeway's Haiti Relief Campaign Reaches $2.5 Million
PLEASANTON, Calif. — February 12, 2010 — Safeway Inc. (NYSE: SWY) today reported that the company has raised or donated more than $2.5 million toward its Haiti Disaster Relief campaign. Safeway stores have collected more than $2.3 million in donations and The Safeway Foundation and Canada Safeway Foundation added $200,000, making a total contribution of just more than $2.5 million for vital relief effort.
The funds will go to the American Red Cross and UNICEF, two organizations at the forefront of the earthquake disaster relief mission. Each contribution made at Safeway's 1,730 stores will go entirely and directly to these organizations to provide food, water, shelter, medical treatment and other crucial necessities needed in Haiti.
"We appreciate this remarkable show of support for the people affected by this disaster," said Larree Renda, Safeway Executive Vice President and Chair of the Safeway Foundation. "These funds will save lives and bring hope to those who need it most in Haiti."
The company's stores throughout the U.S. and Canada will continue collecting donations for Haiti Disaster Relief through a checkstand program. In addition, Safeway's corporate offices and other non-store facilities are conducting employee fundraisers so the company's entire workforce can contribute to this important effort. Customers can donate at any Safeway, Vons, Pavilions, Tom Thumb, Randalls, Dominick's, Genuardi's, Carrs and Pak 'n Save store.
Safeway and The Safeway Foundation focus their philanthropy on a range of important causes, including disaster relief. During the past decade the company mobilized its 185,000 employees with outstanding results to raise money for several major humanitarian outreach efforts, including the September 11th terrorist attacks, the 2005 South Asia tsunami disaster and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Those fundraising efforts raised more than $11 million combined for organizations that provide emergency relief including medical aid, food, shelter and relocation. In addition, Safeway gave $500,000 in supplies and funds to help first responders and outreach agencies during the 2007 San Diego wildfires.
