Tetanus/Diphtheria/PertussisTetanus is a severe infection which is not contagious but can be fatal if untreated. It is caused by bacteria which is found virtaully everywhere and can enter the bloodstream through a wound.
Diphtheria is a contagious disease which spreads through direct contact with an infected person, usually via coughing or sneezing. Like tetanus, it can be fatal if untreated.
Pertussis, commonly called “whooping cough,” affects the respiratory tract causing excessive coughing fits that can disturb normal breathing. This disease might at first seem to be a regular cold but can last for weeks or months without a health-care professional realizing that the symptoms are due to pertussis.
Unfortunately, too many adults forget their booster vaccinations and let their protection "run out". The tetanus/diphtheria vaccine helps protect against both of these serious infections.
InfluenzaCommon influenza causes fever, sore throat, cough, chills, headache, and muscle aches. Each year in the U.S., more than 114,000 people are hospitalized and about 36,000 die because of influenza related illnesses.
The best time to get your flu shot is in October or November, before the height of the annual flu season; however, even as late as January, vaccination can help protect against the flu.
Flu vaccination is especially important for adults age 50 or more, and adults with health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, and other chronic illnesses. However, regardless of age, a yearly flu shot is recommended for almost everyone.
MeningococcalThe meningoccoccal bacteria is a relatively rare but potentially fatal disease that causes meningintis which affects the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Infection can progress to death within 24 to 48 hours, or lead to permanent disabilities such as hearing loss, brain damage, or loss of limbs. It is spread through the exchange of respiratory and throat secretions. Persons who live or work in close quarters with others such as college students as well as those traveling to endemic regions, should consider the vaccine.
PneumococcalPneumococcal disease can result in serious, sometimes fatal infections of the lungs (pneumonia), the blood (bacteremia) and the brain (meningitis).
You can protect yourself from this disease with the pneumococcal vaccine which can be administered at any time of the year and provides long-term protection against the disease.
